Brian’s home build kit road bike.

What made you decide to build a bamboo bike?
“I’ve always wanted to build a whole bike from scratch and the Bamboo Bicycle Club home build kit provided me with the method and materials to achieve this.I really like the idea of building a frame from bamboo and being able to accomplish this with minimal tools and rudimentary carpentry skills.

Did you enjoy building the bicycle from scratch and would you recommend the experience?
I love making things with my hands so making a bike frame and building it up into a fully functional bike was well worth the effort. The build involves lots of making sure things are aligned properly, lots of sanding and lots of glueing with epoxy resin.A lot of time, patience and effort is required but it is definitely worth it.

What did you find most difficult about your bike build? The rear triangle was the most challenging part of the build because the angles and clearances need to be carefully checked.I’d recommend trying the wheel and tyre you intend to use on the finished bike to make sure it’s going to work.

What was the easiest part of the build? The final coat of lacquer was the easiest part as all the difficult tasks had been accomplished at that stage.I used a clear satin exterior varnish which gives an understated natural finish.

How would you describe the ride of your finished bike? The bike rides really well and feels like a light steel-framed bike.nI built mine with a carbon fork and 28C tyres – it is comfortable and rolls really well.

What would you improve about the build experience or your finished bike? With the home build kit jig it is very useful to think in terms of the plane of symmetry the divides the bike in half from the head tube through the bottom bracket/seat post and the rear axle. The front wheel must line up exactly with the rear wheel. It is very important to check that the jig pieces as supplied are correctly positioned so that everything is centred as accurately as possible before doing any measuring, cutting or glueing.

I would highly recommend building your own bamboo bike –  there’s something about cycling around on a bike that you built yourself that is very satisfying.”
