Phase Two: Choose Your Bamboo

Released: 16th June 2015

We hand select bamboo that has consistent wall thickness and outside diameter as well as the correct maturity. Moso and Tonkin are two species we typically use because of their strength and environmental performance. We allow the bamboo to naturally acclimate by storing it for 4 months before it is used in our workshop or sent out in home build kits.

Choosing bamboo is a crucial part of the bike building process and another step that makes each bike unique. Different sections of the bamboo culm are used for different areas of the bike. For example, the base of the bamboo is thick-walled and good under compression, so it is well suited for a seat tube. Each builder is guided through choosing the right type of bamboo for their project.
