Types of frame finishes

When you build a bamboo bike the types of finishes and component options are endless. To try and help with some options we’ve written a very brief blog to help to explain the time and cost involved in getting the finish you can be proud of!

Natural Finish

Giles built a off-road backpacking bike.

  • Remove straight from the jig and remove any tape and excess resin.
  • Apply lacquer to protect the bamboo against UV and moisture.
  • Fit components.

Frame Finish time – 2hrs

Component fitting time – 5 hrs

Polished Natural Finish

Glenn’s 650B bamboo Bike

  • Remove from jig
  • Using a 13mm power sander smoth the lugs 60 grit belt
  • Polish with upto 240 grit sand paper
  • Apply Epoxy Resin to lugs restore the natural color
  • Fit components (1 x 10 groupset + hydraulic disc brake)

Frame Finish time – 5hrs

Component fitting time – 6hrs

Painted basic Finish

Josh’s cyclocross bike

  • Remove from jig
  • Using a 13mm power sander smooth the lugs 60 grit belt
  • Apply filler to smooth.
    Sand and polish apply more filler in areas if needed
  • Prime, Paint, Laquer
  • Fit components (2 x 10 groupset + hydraulic disc brake plus racks and mudguards)

Frame Finish time – 8 hrs

Component fitting time – 8 hrs

Painted High Finish

Kim’s road bike

  • Remove from jig
  • Using a 13mm power sander smoth the lugs 60 grit belt
  • Apply filler to smooth.
    Sand and polish apply more filler in areas if needed
  • Apply decals
  • Prime, Paint, Laquer
  • Fit components (2 x 10 groupset + hydraulic disc brake)

Frame Finish time – 8 hrs

Componenet fitting time – 8 hrs
